Ubiquitous in funk playing and widely used in 1960’s psychedelia (think Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix), this pedal is capable of so much more and has spawned a full genre of pedals.

To turn the pedal on just push down with the ball of your foot until it clicks and then you’re in business.

The Jim Dunlop Crybaby pedal is made from die cast metal is is super durable. It can be powered by battery and mains.

The wah wah effect can be used in more subtle ways than just getting a straight forwards wah sound, have a listen to Joe Satriani’s ‘Back to Shallabal’ or Steve Vai’s ‘For the Love of God’ and you’ll find the pedal being used to add in tonal dimensions to long musical phrases accentuating the impact.  On Dave Lee Roth’s ‘Yankee Rose’ Steve Vai has a go at conversing with Dave on the intro using a wah wah pedal – the Morley version of the pedal.

If you haven’t played with one of these before it’s time to have a go, you’ll be able to get expression like never before out of those blues solos.

The Jim Dunlop Crybaby  pedal is the godfather of all wah wah guitar pedals (it wasn’t the first one, but it’s by far the most popular) and it makes a valuable contribution to your pedalboard. There have been some criticisms of this pedal with regards to the noise level and tonal range, you might like to check out the Morley Bad Horsie Wah, Ibanez WD7 Weeping Demon or the catchily named MXR MC404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah. These pedals have slightly different takes on what a wah wah pedal should do and how they should do it, but for the money the original Crybaby is a worthy purchase.

Use this pedal to sound like:

Steve Vai, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Charlie Pitts (theme from Shaft)
